How to Assign Nintendo Account Family Group Roles

Instructions on setting or transferring a specific Nintendo Account role (admin, parent / guardian, or supervised).

Additional Information:

  • For information about the functions of each role in a family group, click here.

  • Only the family group admin can transfer the admin role and set a parent / guardian account.

  • Nintendo Accounts added for children aged 12 and under are automatically set as a supervised account.

Complete These Steps:

Applies to: Admin

  1. Log into the admin Nintendo Account for the family group.

    • The admin role can only be transferred by the current Nintendo Account admin to a non-supervised account in the family group.

  2. Select “Family group.”

  3. Select “Manage family group.”

  4. Select “Change family group admin.”

    • If the option isn’t appearing, you are not logged in with the admin account. Review the other members in the family group to verify the admin.

    • If the option is grayed out, there are not any non-supervised accounts that you can transfer the role to. There is not currently a way to remove the “supervised” designation from a Nintendo Account.

  5. Click “Submit.”

  6. A verification e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address associated with your Nintendo Account. When it arrives, enter the 6-digit verification code from the e-mail, and click “Submit” to continue.

  7. Click “Select this person” next to the family group member that you want to transfer the admin role to.

  8. Review the information on the screen, and select “Confirm change.”

Applies to: Parent

  1. Log into the admin Nintendo Account for the family group.

    • Only an admin aged 18+ can set a parent / guardian account.

    • If the current admin is under 18, they will need to first transfer admin rights to a family group member aged 18+. (Parent / guardian status is automatically assigned to any admin aged 18+.)

  2. Select “Family group.”

  3. Select the Nintendo Account that you want to set as a parent / guardian account.

    • Parent / Guardian status can only be set to non-supervised Nintendo Accounts for users aged 18+.

  4. Click “Set as parent / guardian” to complete the process. The parent / guardian can manage Nintendo eShop restrictions for any supervised accounts in the family group.

Applies to: Supervised

  1. Log into an admin or parent / guardian Nintendo Account in the family group.

  2. Select “Family group.”

  3. Select the Nintendo Account that you want to set as a supervised account.

  4. Select “Set as supervised account,” then “OK.”

    • A verification e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address that you entered.

  5. The owner of the other Nintendo Account will need to do the following to agree:

    1. Open the e-mail and click the verification link.

    2. Sign in to their Nintendo Account.

    3. Click “Accept” to set their account as Supervised.

  6. Once the Nintendo Account owner has agreed, their account will appear as “Supervised” in the family group.

Applies to: Remove Supervised Status

  1. Log into an admin or parent / guardian Nintendo Account in the family group.

  2. Select “Family group.”

  3. Select the Nintendo Account that you want to stop supervising.

    • This restriction cannot be lifted for users that are under age 13 OR who have not yet registered an e-mail address to their Nintendo Account (age 13 and over only).

  5. Review the information on the screen, then select "Lift parental controls" to confirm.
