Nintendo Switch Online Support

  • Overview

    The Nintendo Switch Online app is compatible with select games, giving players the ability to voice chat during various online game modes, and use game-specific features, such as SplatNet 2 for Splatoon 2.

    The app is available for iOS and Android devices.

    • What is required to use the Nintendo Switch Online app?

      To use the Nintendo Switch Online app, you must have the following:

      • A Nintendo Switch and compatible game (either physical or digital).
         
      • An Android or iOS smart device.
         
      • A Nintendo Account linked to your Nintendo Switch console and smart device.
         
      • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the online features of the Nintendo Switch Online app.
         
      • Important: The Nintendo Switch Online app service can be used by Nintendo Account holders who are age 13 and older.
         

      An active Internet connection is required to download and use the application. As with most applications, data usage rate will vary by application feature. Your internet/mobile service provider may apply data charges based on how you connect the smart device to the Internet. The Nintendo Switch Online application can use mobile data or Wi-Fi network.

       

    • Does the app require a Nintendo Switch Online membership?
      Both the app's functionality and online play on Nintendo Switch require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
    • How do I get the Nintendo Switch Online app?

      The Nintendo Switch Online app can be downloaded to your smart device from the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android).

      Which smart devices are supported?

      • iOS (Apple): Devices using iOS 10.0 or later are supported.
         
      • Android: Devices running Android OS 5.0 or later are supported
         

      Prior to April 07, 2019, the app was compatible with iOS 9.0 and with Android OS 4.4. In order to provide a better experience, improvements were implemented with an app update on April 07, 2019 which increased the OS version required. If you are using a lower OS version, please consider updating to a newer OS or use the app on a compatible device.

    • What games are supported?

      At the launch of Nintendo Switch Online, software updates will be made available for several popular games to provide support for voice chat via the app, including:

      • ARMS
      • DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2
      • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
      • Mario Tennis Aces
      • MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order
      • Splatoon 2
      • Super Mario Party
      • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
         

      Plus, the entire NES - Nintendo Switch Online game library will support voice chat using the Nintendo Switch Online app.

    • Do I need to use the Nintendo Switch Online app to play games online?
      The Nintendo Switch Online app provides additional features, such as voice chat and the ability to send user invites over social media, but it is not required to play Splatoon 2 online.
    • How to Download or Update the Nintendo Switch Online App

      Important: In order to provide a better experience, improvements were implemented with an app update on 4/7/19 which increased the required iOS version (10.0 or later) and Android OS version (10.0 or later). If you are using a lower OS version, please consider updating to a newer OS or use the app on a compatible device.
       

      Note

      • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the Nintendo Switch Online app features.
         
      • The Nintendo Switch Online app service can be used by Nintendo Account holders who are age 13 and older.
         
      • The Nintendo Switch Online app is compatible with smart devices which use the iOS and Android operating systems.
         

      Complete these steps

      1. From your smart device, visit either the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android) and search for "Nintendo Switch Online."
      2. Select the Nintendo Switch Online app, and then select the appropriate option to download/install/update the application.
         
      3. Once downloaded, select the Nintendo Switch Online app to open it, and then sign in with your Nintendo Account.

      • Supported OS versions changed. Android 11 and iOS 14 are now supported.

      • Various performance and usability improvements implemented, including changing the button display position.

      • Supported OS versions changed. To use this app, iOS ver 10.0 (or later) or Android ver 5.5 (or later) is now required.
         

      Ver. 1.4.0 (Released September 9, 2018)

      • Added voice chat support for additional software.
        • A list of software that supports voice chat can be found within the app by selecting Voice Chat from the Main Menu, and then selecting Supported Software.
           
      • Other enhancements have been made to improve performance and usability.
         

      Ver. 1.1.0 (Released September 12, 2017)

      • Voice chat will now continue when other apps are opened.*
         
      • Voice chat will now continue during sleep mode.**
         
      • Improved support for Bluetooth devices. (For Android devices only.)
         

      * This excludes apps with audio output or apps that use the microphone.

      ** If the power-saving feature is activated on devices using Android 6.0 or later, voice chat may be interrupted after the device has entered sleep mode. To use voice chat during sleep mode, go to Other Settings then Power Saving Settings in the app and deactivate battery optimization on the Android device.     • How to Voice Chat Using the Nintendo Switch Online App

      Note

      • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the voice chat features of the Nintendo Switch Online app.
         
      • For help determining which games support the Voice Chat feature, please see the full list of compatible titles.
         
      • The Nintendo Switch Online app service can be used by Nintendo Switch Online members who are age 13 and older.
         

      Complete these steps

      1. From your smart device, download and install the Nintendo Switch Online app.
         
      2. Start the Nintendo Switch Online app and sign in with your Nintendo Account.
         
      3. From your Nintendo Switch console, start the compatible software using the same Nintendo Account as used on the Nintendo Switch Online app.
         
      4. On the Nintendo Switch, start the game mode (multiplayer) that supports voice chat.
         
      5. On the smart device, select Start after receiving the prompt asking, Start voice chat?
         
      6. As you play online, other players using the Nintendo Switch Online app will join the voice chat lobby as they join your online game.
    • Can I play online and chat with anyone or just friends?
      When joining supported online modes, you can chat with any of the other players also using the Nintendo Switch Online app.
    • Can I use the app to voice chat with other players when not playing a game?
      No. Players are not able to start voice chat communication until they have joined other players in-game.
    • Can I use the Nintendo Switch Online app on multiple smart devices?

      If you would like to change devices, you can sign in to a new device using your Nintendo Account. However, it is not possible to use voice chat on two or more smart devices at the same time if they use the same Nintendo Account. Each user would need to use his or her own Nintendo Account in order to voice chat with each other.

    • Can I use a headset or headphones for voice chat?

      Yes. You are able to use headsets or headphones connected to your smart device. If using a wireless Bluetooth headphone or headset with your smart device, ensure it supports the HSP or HFP Bluetooth profile.

      Please note that game sounds normally output from the TV or Nintendo Switch console will not be heard from your smart device.

    • If I use my smart device's other features (texts, social media, etc.) will I be disconnected?

      No, if the application is updated to version 1.1.0 or higher, voice chat will continue in the background, even if you press the home button or sleep button on your smart device.

      A notification will appear when the app is minimized to let you know when it is running in the background. If you wish to disable voice chat while remaining in the chat room, you can press the X button at the bottom of the chat screen to suspend voice chat.

    • How much network data is used by the smart device using this application?
      An active Internet connection is required to download and use the application. As with most applications, data usage rate will vary by application feature. Your internet/mobile service provider may apply data charges based on how you connect the smart device to the Internet. The Nintendo Switch Online application can use mobile data or Wi-Fi network.
    • How do I set Parental Control restrictions?

      The service can be used by Nintendo Account holders who are age 13 and older. Because the app runs on your smart device, it cannot be controlled by the parental controls offered in Nintendo's ecosystem. To set restrictions for use of the Nintendo Switch Online app, please refer to your smart device settings.

    • How to Access NookLink in the Nintendo Switch Online App (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

      In this article, you'll learn how to access NookLink in the Nintendo Switch Online app, to enhance some of the features in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

      Important: If you've recreated your character or island and NookLink is still displaying your previous data, please read A Deleted Character Still Appears in NookLink (Animal Crossing: New Horizons) for further assistance.

      Note

      • NookLink is a service in the Nintendo Switch Online app that allows you to use custom design QR codes from earlier Animal Crossing titles, use your keyboard to chat with other players, and see information about your Best Friends in the game.
         
      • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use NookLink.
         

      Complete these steps

      1. If you have not already done so, activate NookLink from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons title screen.
        1. Launch the game from the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
           
        2. On the title screen, press the (-) Button (Settings).
           
        3. Select NookLink settings, then Yes, please.
           
      2. Launch the Nintendo Switch Online app on your smart device and link the same Nintendo Account that you use with Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
         
      3. In the “Game-Specific Services” area of the app, select Animal Crossing: New Horizons to access the available features:
        • Passport: View information about your character and other residents that you've encountered.
           
        • Designs: Scan a QR Code for designs created in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Animal Crossing: Happy Home Design. You can use your NookPhone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to download saved designs to your game.
           
        • Keyboards: Use your smart device keyboard to chat with friends.
           
        • Best Friends: View and communicate with your Best Friends in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
           
        • Settings: Change the player or language on your app, and view copyright information and credits.
    • A Deleted Character or Island Still Appears in NookLink (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)

      The information in this article will help you if a deleted character or island from Animal Crossing: New Horizons is still appearing in NookLink on the Nintendo Switch Online app.

      Complete these steps

      1. Once you have created a new character or island that you want to associate with NookLink, activate NookLink from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons title screen.
        1. Launch the game from the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
           
        2. On the title screen, press the (-) Button (Settings).
           
        3. Select NookLink settings, then Yes, please.
           
      2. Launch the Nintendo Switch Online app on your smart device and link the same Nintendo Account that you use with Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
         
      3. Select Animal Crossing: New Horizons to access NookLink.
         
      4. If the previous character is still displaying, select Settings, then Change players to manually select your current character.

      Important

      • All players wishing to use voice chat must download the Nintendo Switch Online app to a smart device and sign in using the same Nintendo Account they are using to play Splatoon 2.
         
      • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the online features of Splatoon 2 and the Nintendo Switch Online app.
         

      Complete these steps

      Create a Room

      From Splatoon 2

      1. Press the X Button to open the Menu, and then select Lobby.
        • Select Grizzco instead of Lobby if you are joining a Salmon Run.
           
      2. Scroll down and select Online Lounge.
         
      3. Select Create Room, and use the drop down menu to select the game mode.
         

      Important: Salmon Run can only be selected when the Online Lounge is created from Grizzco.

        • Private Match
           
        • League Battle (pair)
           
        • League Battle (team)
           
      1. Select Allow Nintendo Switch friends to join the room with a password if you would like users without the Nintendo Switch Online app to join.
         
      2. Select OK to create the room.
         
      3. Select Send Notification to My Smart Device.
         
      4. Return to your smart device and complete the following steps.
         

      From your smart device

      1. Select the notification you've received, or open the Nintendo Switch Online app and select the room you've created.
         
      2. Select from the following invitation methods and follow the onscreen steps to send the invite(s):
        • Social Network Friend.
          • Send a URL using messaging applications or social media platforms which other players can open on their smart device to join your lounge.
             
        • Nintendo Switch Friend.
          • Send a notification to the smart device of players from your Nintendo Switch friend list that use the Nintendo Switch Online app.
             
        • User You Played With.
          • Send a notification to the smart device of players you recently played with that use the Nintendo Switch Online app.
             
      3. Once the other users have accepted your invite and joined the Online Lounge in Splatoon 2, you will be able to voice chat with the users.


      Join a Room

      From your smart device

      1. Select the notification you've received, or open the Nintendo Switch Online app and select Invitation List, and then select the room you'd like to join.
        • If you were invited via Social Network, open the URL that was sent to you by your friend.
           
      2. Return to Splatoon 2 and complete the following steps.
         

      From Splatoon 2

      1. Press the X Button to open the Menu, and then select Lobby.
        • Select Grizzco instead of Lobby if you would like to join a Salmon Run Online Lounge during the designated Salmon Run times.
           
      2. Scroll down and select Online Lounge.
         
      3. Select the room you were invited to join.
    • How to Report Players You Have Played with in Splatoon 2 for Inappropriate Activity

      In this article, you'll learn how to report players that you have recently played with in Splatoon 2 for inappropriate activity.

      Important: Reporting players you have recently played with can only be done through the Nintendo Switch Online app

      Complete these steps

      1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online app on your smart device.
         
      2. Select Splatoon 2.
         
      3. Select the Battle Stats option (two crossing arrows) from the bottom menu.
         
      4. Scroll down, and select the last battle you played.
         
      5. Scroll down to view a list of players from that battle.
         
      6. Select the player you wish to report, and then select Report.
         
      7. Scroll down and select the incident detail (reason for reporting), and enter the specific details in the box below.
         
      8. Select Report to send the user report.
    • How to Report Inappropriate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Content (Nintendo Switch Online App)

      In this article, you'll learn how to report profanity or inappropriate content displayed in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate section of the Nintendo Switch Online app.

      Complete these steps

      1. Select the content you want to report.
         
      2. Tap the three white dots in the upper-right corner.
         
      3. Tap Report.
        • If this option is grayed out, you have already reported this content.
           
        • You can also select Block Creator to block any future content from the same user.
           
      4. Select the reason from the drop-down list.
         
      5. Add any additional context to the Additional Info field.
         
      6. Select Report, then Yes to flag the content for review.
