Nintendo has prepared a bumper line-up of new games and products on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS and 2DS systems for the end of 2014. The line-up includes new entries from some of the biggest series in gaming, plus new amiibo interactive figures featuring some of gaming’s most iconic characters.

The first 12 amiibo interactive figures available at launch (SRP AU$17.95) will be Mario, Peach, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Kirby, Fox, Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, with more on the way in the future.

Along with amiibo, here’s what lies in store for Nintendo fans leading up to the end of 2014:

Major Series: Nintendo has four games from two of the most well-known series launching this year:

  • Super Smash Bros.: The Wii U game and the first portable game in the series are getting ready for their debuts. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launches on 4th October, with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U following summer 2014. As another offering for fans, those who register both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the games in Club Nintendo – before a set time - can claim the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U: Premium Sound Selection, a free soundtrack CD* packed with tunes taken from and inspired by the games. Further details on the timings pertaining to this offering will follow at a later date. Also in a separate announcement, Nintendo revealed that Shulk from the Xenoblade Chronicles series will be a playable character in both games.
  • Pokémon: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire for Nintendo 3DS hits stores and Nintendo eShop on 21st November. Trainers will catch, battle and trade Pokémon as they immerse themselves into a grand tale that draws ever closer to the heart of the secrets behind Mega Evolution and the power of Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. With beautifully rendered graphics and new challenges to overcome, these games are a true evolution in the Pokémon series.

Interactive amiibo Figures: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which launches summer 2014, will be the first game with full integration of amiibo. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come. More details on amiibo functionality and an official launch date will be revealed shortly.

Bayonetta 2: The witch is back in October in the game that features over-the-top battles with wild weapons in gorgeous locations, with a new story that takes Bayonetta on a journey to inferno to save her friend’s soul. The original Bayonetta game is also available as a standalone on Nintendo eShop, or in a bundle with the retail packaged version of Bayonetta 2. Remade for Wii U, Bayonetta comes complete with some Nintendo cosplay options for the powerful heroine.

Hyrule Warriors Add-on Content: This mashup of Dynasty Warriors and The Legend of Zelda series already includes a large amount of content. Nintendo plans to support the game for the long run with more content to help players expand their adventures even further. That program kicks off when the game launches on 20th September with a free download that adds a fun new mode, weapon and the option to select music.

Ultimate NES Remix: Available in stores and on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS on 8th November, the game features rapid-fire challenges and mash-ups from a selection of 16 of Nintendo’s finest 8-bit games. Regional online leaderboards will let players see how they stack up against others in their area, and Championship Mode offers a gauntlet of challenges from three different games.

Fantasy Life Add-on Content: Available in stores and on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS on 27th September, Fantasy Life lets players become the masters of their destinies as every choice they make determines their unique Fantasy Life. Players can easily change their Life Class at any time and experience how each offers a new perspective on the world. Local and online multiplayer options let friends share the adventure, the exploration and the bounty. An add-on content pack called Origin Island – available from launch - will extend the Fantasy Life adventure even further. Origin Island offers a whole new area home to an ancient culture and powerful enemies, additional story content, new ranks to achieve in Life Classes, access to even more powerful equipment and two new varieties of pets to adopt: birds and dragons.

New Themes for Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu: Following a system update planned in October, Nintendo will be introducing new HOME Menu themes that allow Nintendo 3DS and 2DS owners to personalise their systems by changing the menu background, icons and folders, and music and sound effects. Themes will be available for purchase from a Theme Shop that will be added to the HOME Menu. Stay tuned for more details coming in the future.

Indie Games: A number of great downloadable games, many of which are exclusive to Nintendo eShop, are on their way this year:

  • Curve Digital’s Stealth Inc 2 combines the best elements of puzzle solving, action platforming and stealth gameplay into a game that’s all about hiding in the shadows. The game launches exclusively on Wii U in Q4. The game includes a two-player co-op mode, level editor, off-TV play and Miiverse integration.
  • Swords & Soldiers II is a side scrolling action strategy game from Ronimo Games launching in Q4 2014 exclusively on Wii U. The game includes 20 story missions and lets players buy units, cast spells and build structures to overwhelm enemies on a 2D battleground.

Link Mode, an online communication tool discovered by paying an in-game visit to the Guild Office in the town of Castele, is a feature that - once activated - allows you to connect with friends when they are playing Fantasy Life at the same time*, and exchange messages and valuable tips during gameplay. To keep your friends informed of your in-game exploits, Link Mode also contains a notification setting to communicate your achievements, and ‘Applaud’ the landmarks reached by others.

As part of the game’s wider co-operative features, players can get together with up to two friends via either local wireless or online multiplayer and explore the world of Reveria together, with online multiplayer incorporating its own chat feature for players to communicate while – for example - on a hunt, or foraging for precious items! So whether you are in need of reinforcements to defeat a powerful monster, or are seeking to trade certain items with friends via an in-game Exchange Box, taking part in co-operative play with friends will help you accumulate much-needed experience and items to aid in your adventures.

In addition, with the game supporting StreetPass functionality, watch out for other players turning up in your game as citizens of Reveria after a StreetPass encounter. Befriend these fellow players, and you may even receive new items. Meanwhile, in order to capture your most exciting moments in Reveria, you can also unlock the Snapshots function, which will enable you to capture in-game screenshots by pressing the START button - just another way to show off your adventures to others!

From 22nd - 28th August, the Super Smash Bros. Character Sale: Veteran Fighters will let players get reacquainted with characters returning to the Super Smash Bros. series. To find out which titles will go on sale that week, stay tuned to Nintendo eShop, the Super Smash Bros. Facebook page or the Nintendo website. With over 25 games on Nintendo eShop on sale during August, it’s a perfect time to meet the colourful cast of Super Smash Bros ahead of 4th October.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is the first portable entry in the renowned series and lets up to four players battle each other locally or online using some of gaming’s most iconic characters. Compete with veteran characters from the series such as Mario, Link, Samus, Sonic, Pikachu and - just revealed today - Meta Knight, along with new challengers like Mega Man, Little Mac, PAC-MAN and Palutena; while for the first time players can also compete using their own Mii characters. Also brand new to the series is the ability to customise different aspects of your fighter, when playing locally or online with registered friends in a variety of multiplayer modes.

Smash and crash through Smash Run, a new mode exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version that gives up to four players five minutes to explore a huge battlefield, taking down enemies from almost every major Nintendo franchise and multiple third-party partners. Defeated enemies leave behind power-ups and players who collect the most have advantages when - once time runs out - the final battle for the champion begins. It’s also possible to hone your skills in activities such as the new Target Blast, where you attack a bomb to charge it up then launch it at a range of targets to cause a chain reaction for a high score.

Fight against friends and family locally or online, or battle random challengers all over the world online in “For Fun” or “For Glory” modes. It’s a genuine, massive Super Smash Bros. experience that’s available to play on the go, anytime, anywhere. It’s also the perfect way to get to grips with the huge roster of fighters and their special moves, who will all return for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U when that game launches in summer 2014.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will launch in Australia and New Zealand on 4th October 2014 - dig into the legacy of its colourful cast of fighters with two weeks of sales on over 25 games for Nintendo 3DS and 2DS as well as Wii U on Nintendo eShop.
